If you’re ready to move beyond traditional facials and start targeting concerns like sun damage, pigmentation, uneven skin tone, texture, fine lines or acne scarring, two treatments you’ll probably come across are IPL and microneedling.
Both are advanced skin treatments. Both can create noticeable improvements in the appearance of your skin. And both can be incorporated into a long-term skin plan.
But they work in completely different ways.
The easiest way to think about it?
IPL targets colour. Microneedling targets structure.
And depending on what you see when you look in the mirror, one—or sometimes both—may make sense for your skin.
What Is IPL?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light.
Unlike a traditional laser that uses a single wavelength of light, IPL uses multiple wavelengths of light to target specific chromophores, or colour, within the skin.
At Ciao Bella Advanced Aesthetics, our IPL Photofacial is performed using a 530 nm filter, allowing us to target concerns such as visible pigmentation and redness.
The light energy is absorbed by the targeted pigment, while leaving the surrounding skin relatively unaffected.
Over the days following treatment, brown pigmentation may temporarily appear darker before gradually flaking or fading as the skin renews itself.
IPL May Be a Good Choice If You’re Concerned About:
- Sun damage
- Brown spots
- Freckles
- Uneven pigmentation
- Redness
- Blotchy or uneven-looking skin tone
If the first thing you notice about your skin is colour or discolouration, IPL is often the treatment we start talking about.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling takes an entirely different approach.
Rather than using light to target pigmentation, microneedling creates controlled microchannels within the skin.
This controlled process activates the skin’s natural wound-healing response and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin.
Over time, that rebuilding process can help improve the overall quality, texture and firmness of the skin.
At Ciao Bella, we use Twist Microneedling and typically recommend a series when we’re working toward more significant correction.
Microneedling May Be a Good Choice If You’re Concerned About:
- Acne scarring
- Uneven skin texture
- Enlarged-looking pores
- Fine lines
- Loss of firmness
- Overall skin rejuvenation
- Collagen production
If your biggest concern is how your skin feels or its overall structure, microneedling may be the better place to start.
IPL vs. Microneedling: The Biggest Difference
Here’s the simplest comparison:
IPL = pigment + redness
Microneedling = texture + collagen
Think about a client with years of sun exposure who has developed scattered brown pigmentation across the cheeks. Microneedling may improve the overall quality of her skin, but it isn’t specifically designed to target that visible pigment the way IPL is.
Now think about someone with acne scarring and uneven texture but very little pigmentation. IPL wouldn’t necessarily address her primary concern. Microneedling would likely make more sense.
This is exactly why choosing a treatment based solely on what’s trending online isn’t always the best approach.
The right treatment depends on what we’re actually trying to change.
But What If You Have Both?
This is where professional treatment planning becomes especially valuable.
Most people don’t walk into Ciao Bella with only one skin concern.
You might have sun damage and fine lines.
Pigmentation and enlarged-looking pores.
Redness and uneven texture.
In those situations, IPL and microneedling don’t necessarily have to compete with one another.
They can address different components of the same overall skin goal.
For example, we may use IPL as part of a plan to address visible sun damage and uneven pigmentation, while microneedling treatments are incorporated separately to stimulate collagen and improve texture.
Rather than asking:
“Which treatment is better?”
A better question is:
“What does my skin actually need?”
Which One Has More Downtime?
Neither treatment requires the type of extended recovery associated with more aggressive resurfacing procedures, but you should expect some visible changes after either treatment.
Following IPL, the skin may appear pink or slightly red initially. Pigmentation can become noticeably darker before gradually lifting or flaking away over the following days.
Following microneedling, redness is common and the skin may feel warm, tight or sensitive. Mild dryness or flaking can also occur as the skin recovers.
Post-treatment skincare matters with both treatments.
Gentle cleansing, hydration, barrier support and diligent SPF use are especially important while the skin is recovering.
Can You Have IPL and Microneedling Together?
They can absolutely be part of the same overall treatment plan, but that doesn’t mean they should necessarily be performed at the same appointment.
Your provider can determine appropriate timing between treatments based on your skin, treatment intensity and individual goals.
This is one of the reasons we prefer creating a skin plan rather than simply booking random treatments.
We’re not trying to do everything at once.
We’re deciding what your skin needs first, what comes next, and how each treatment can build on the results of the last.
So… IPL or Microneedling?
If you’re primarily concerned about:
Brown spots + sun damage + redness → think IPL.
If you’re primarily concerned about:
Texture + pores + acne scarring + collagen → think microneedling.
And if you’re reading both lists thinking, “Well… all of the above,” you’re definitely not alone.
You may benefit from incorporating both into your long-term skin plan.
The Bottom Line
There isn’t one advanced treatment that’s best for everyone.
Great skin results come from choosing the right treatment for the right concern at the right time.
IPL and microneedling are both powerful tools—but they do different jobs.
At Ciao Bella Advanced Aesthetics, we can assess your skin, talk about what you’d actually like to improve, and recommend a treatment plan based on those goals.
Because when it comes to advanced skincare, more treatment isn’t necessarily better. The right treatment is.
